Selling on OLX or Facebook Marketplace? Do This to Your Photos First

Photo To Info Team · · 4 min read

Selling an old phone, bike or sofa on OLX, Facebook Marketplace, Quikr or Instagram? Before you tap "Post", stop for 30 seconds. The photos you upload can carry hidden location data, and the visible background can show even more. This checklist helps you sell safely, and you can copy it and share it with anyone who sells things online.

Why sellers are at risk

Most sale photos are taken at home. If your phone saved GPS data in the picture, the file can contain the exact coordinates of your living room. Whether a site removes that data from the public copy depends on the site and can change, so you should not rely on it. Photos you send by email, as a file or on WhatsApp "document" mode usually keep all the data.

The 10-point safe seller checklist

  1. Turn off location for the camera. iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. Android: switch off location tags in camera settings.
  2. Clean the photos before uploading. Use Photo To Info (free, no login) and press Clean all.
  3. Upload the clean copy, named like photo_clean.jpg, not the original.
  4. Check the background. Remove or hide letters, door numbers, delivery boxes and documents.
  5. Look at windows and mirrors. Reflections can show your street or face.
  6. Hide serial numbers and IMEI when you sell electronics, unless a buyer needs them after you meet.
  7. Use a neutral spot, like a plain wall or table, for photos.
  8. Do not share your home address in the listing or chat. Meet in a public place.
  9. Keep conversations on the platform where possible, and be careful with strangers who rush you.
  10. Keep your original files in your phone gallery as a private backup.

How to clean your sale photos in under a minute

  1. Open Photo To Info on your phone.
  2. Choose all your listing photos (JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 50 MB each).
  3. Check the tags found. Location fields are highlighted in red.
  4. Press Clean all.
  5. Download the ZIP or each clean photo and upload those.

The work happens in your browser, so the photos are not uploaded to our server. Your originals stay untouched. Read the steps on How It Works.

5 common mistakes sellers make

1. Trusting the platform to clean everything

Some platforms strip metadata, some do not, and rules change. Clean it yourself.

2. Sending original photos to buyers

When a buyer asks for "more pictures" by email or chat, you may be sending the full original file. Send clean copies.

3. Forgetting the background

Metadata is only half the risk. A parcel label or a house number in the picture is visible to everyone.

4. Posting at the exact time you leave home

Photo time and date can show your routine. Avoid sharing when your house is empty.

5. Using one photo for many listings

Every copy carries the same hidden data. Clean once and reuse the clean file.

What cleaning cannot protect

Metadata cleaning removes tags from the file. It does not remove anything you can see in the picture, and it does not remove data hidden inside the pixels. That is why the background check matters. The FAQ explains the limits openly.

Frequently asked questions

Do OLX or Facebook Marketplace remove location from photos?

Many large platforms remove most metadata from the public copy, but behaviour can change and other routes (chat, email) can send the original. Cleaning your photos first is the safe choice.

Is Photo To Info free for sellers?

Yes. It is free and there is no login requirement.

Can I clean many listing photos at once?

Yes. Add them together, press Clean all and download one ZIP.

Will the photos look worse?

No. They look the same. JPEG files are re-saved, so the size may change slightly.
